CJ Makes You Feel Like A Kid In A Candy Store! (photo courtesy of Popsies.com)
Pleeeeease don’t get me wrong!
I love me some Clickbank. Clickbank has been very good to me even with some problems here and there. When you are in business you’ll have problems some times…just the way the jello jiggles.
Here’s the thang.
If you are trying to promote Clickbank to EVERY STARVING CROWD…then you aren’t being a good affiliate matchmaker…and not only does your income suffer…
But also…
It’s frustrating trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.
Now the first place I would head is Commission Junction or lovingly known as CJ. They have HUNDREDS of very lucrative offers to MATCH with your STARVING CROWDS.
I remember when I first signed up and had a good look around…I felt like a kid in a candy store.
There’s a lot of money being made…and WAY MORE money to be made at CJ and other affiliate networks.
You can sign up here…and I’m not slippin’ ya an affiliate link:
https://signup.cj.com/member/publisherSignUp.do
Now…if you don’t have a website…there is a box that says name of newsletter. So you need to come up with a good sounding newsletter name and put it in the box.
NOW!
Here’s where I need your help.
There are LOTS of other great affiliate networks out there too, but it seems that folks get stuck signing up for them.
I already know where a few of you have trouble, but if you would? Would you leave comments on…
What is giving YOU trouble signing up for other affiliate networks?
And…
I’ll see if I can address those soon:-)
How ’bout it?
Travis

Hey Travis,
I tried to sign up for AzoogleAds, but I was denied. I don’t know why either. I tried to call the lady that was in charge of approving new affiliates and she just wanted to work through email. So, I emailed her and asked why I was denied and I never got a response! I understand that people are very busy, but is it too much to ask for a simple reply??
Ok, this isn’t an issue actually signing up for other affiliate sites – but it is a kind of “pet peeve” of mine with some of the other affiliate networks…
My issue is the approval process for being approved to be an affiliate – I have experienced this with CJ and Linkshare — I don’t mind that affiliates need to be approved because the companies don’t want people spamming, etc… my issue is that they never actually tell you WHY you weren’t approved. If you aren’t told why, how can you improve or correct the issue so that you CAN eventually be approved to be an affiliate. Do you have any tips or ideas on how to find out why you weren’t approved? Or would you say, just forget it and move on to another company?
Thanks,
Liz
There are two affiliate networks that give me the most challenges.
Linkshare and PepperJam.
I’m not certain of this but I believe once I didn’t renew my top level .com domain that I’d originally registered with, subsequently using a Squidoo lens instead, this may have been the reason for a 100% denial rate for all future affiliate partner requests.
As far as Pepperjam goes, I have had a few direct invites from Vendors but the offers I’ve signed up for directly have denied most if not all of my requests as well.
Next to Commission Junction, Google’s Affiliate program is the BOMB!
Google Connect Commerce which has a gigantic list of well known brand name companies approved my lil’ ole Blogger Blog into their program.
I bout fell out of my chair when this little basic blog was approved.
In my opinion, Linkshare has some of the most well known brand name offers but thank God Google’s Affiliate program is gaining on them in terms of the quantity of Vendor Companies and quality affiliate offers
… AND their Vendors seem to approve my requests at a much higher rate.
In your opinion, do companies still prefer top level domains over free blog or web2.0 properties like Squidoo, Free Webs, Weebly, etc. ?
Thanks,
Sunshine
I have found that places like Avantlink are difficult to get accepted at if you don’t have a relevant niche site that’s already getting plenty of traffic. Some of these places are actually looking at your site page rank, so you can’t just throw up a niche site and get accepted either.
Thanks,
Rex
I went and snaffled the highest keywords from the Callaway ICKY List and created wordpress blogs with them, then went looking for an affiliate program.
The one that showed up highest had CJ as it’s affiliate handler, but one of the conditions was that the word callaway couldn’t appear in the highest domain level, which it does with the wordpress sites, so I got scared off and didn’t go through the whole process.
Also when CJ asks for a URL, which one do you give them, does it matter whether you have a general website that doesn’t really do anything, or do they check that it’s relevant?
Do you need a separate account for each site you are promoting with them so the URL matches what you are promoting?
Always been a bit daunted by those affiliate sites that make the application really long and complex.
Tried several CPA networks and got knocked back from each. Possibly as I don’t have a site to refer to with traffic numbers that they like? Wasn’t sure where to go after that.
Thanks
Debbie
I have trouble when an affiliate program has a sign-up thingy which has fields to fill in for your address that only allows for US, CA and UK… being stuck way out here in Japan, I have to use a friend’s address back home in Maine, if I want to sign up for these.
Brilliant e-mail that linked me to here, by the way, Travis. Funny, the whole “ICK” thing (Insta Cash Keywords), saying it’s not a pencil, it’s an ICK stick, and all those jokes – well, you called them “ICKY jokes” hehe – but then I was hit with a terrible bum-marketing thought… uh,… does that make us all “ICKY BUMS”?? LOL Kinda brings to mind an image of a sludge-covered hobo.
*eeeeeeeeeeewy*
LOL
Hi
The number one problem I’ve encountered is that they all want you to have a website.I dropped commission junction because there are to many hoops to jump through and each advertiser has to approve you, It’s a real nightmare if you plan any ppc campaigns…good god, these people act like they own their trademarks or sumthin….
I’m on primary ads right now, when you sign up just tell them that you are building a double opt in list (or already have one), expect a phone call from an affiliate manager. I wouldn’t lie, just be clear that you aren’t a spammer and intend to do business ethically. They pay right on time as well.
Regards
Bob
I agree with a lot of the previous comments – getting approved for the individual product/merchant programs in the CJ.com network is often the biggest problem, at least for me.
/begin rant/
After all, why should we spend our valuable time, and money: to register a domain name, set-up a fully operational website, stuff it full of content and backlinks – just to have ‘maybe’ a chance of promoting the actual product that we originally wanted to get paid for.
I understand that merchants don’t want porn, warez and other bad sites in their network – but you would think they would implement some sort of probationary period – even if it is just a week – where you could get approved temporarily and start fleshing out your site w/ product reviews, how-to’s, etc.
/end rant/
@Debbie – just use a regular/generic domain name when registering with CJ.com – they approve just about any domain for joining the CJ network itself, it is the individual merchants in the network that are sticklers about having a good, relevant site in order to start promoting them.
Also, you don’t need multiple CJ.com accounts to promote multiple products, CJ does have a pretty good system for helping you keep track of which merchants you are promoting with which site – so one CJ.com account can have as many different domains associated with it as you want – after you go through the initial approval/sign up process.
- just my .02$
Travis and Matt – ANY advice on getting more merchant approvals in CJ.com and other networks would be greatly appreciated.
Great lists and insights so far by the way
I stumbled through the process of trying to sign up with Linkshare. After several attempts of trying to submitt the application, I decided that it was not to be.
I have not tried CPA networks, basically because I feel that I do not have sufficient traffic yet. PPC is not a route I am quite ready to go down just yet.
I suppose now is as good a time as any to join some other affiliate networks.
ICKY times ahead

Hi Travis & Matt-
Just wanna let you know I really enjoyed the latest blog post. Travis you have a way of getting through to people, I guess cause you speak in plain ole English! Anyway, this is probably a silly question, I’m sure, but in the Keywords List that you give us, the number of searches, are those daily or monthly? Just wondering. Thanks so much.
Amanda
